“Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him.”
Jn 13
Today’s Gospel comes from John, featuring Jesus’ words before his death and Resurrection at the Last Supper. Rather than instituting the Eucharist, John’s Gospel depicts Jesus washing his disciples’ feet. He then predicts Judas’ betrayal, and today’s passage follows that prediction, explaining Jesus’ act of service. It begins with Jesus announcing that the Son of Man will be glorified—a theme central to John’s Passion. Jesus is glorified through his death and Resurrection, and the disciples glorify him through love.
“This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Jn 13
John’s Gospel presents love as service and sacrifice, not sentimentality. Choosing love amid hatred is difficult, but Jesus teaches that true disciples are recognized by their love for one another. The Acts of the Apostles echoes this: “See how they love one another.” Christian love, lived through martyrs, saints, and everyday people, is the defining mark of faith.
