At our baptism and confirmation, we receive the same Holy Spirit who came in power upon the disciples at Pentecost. And we can renew his grace in us every day just by spending time with him in prayer and calling on his help.
Someone asked a Christian living in Africa in the 6th century why he didn’t speak in tongues like the apostles had done. His reply was “I do indeed speak in the tongues of all people, because I belong to the body of Christ, that is, the Church, and she speaks all languages. What else did the presence of the Holy
Spirit indicate at Pentecost, except that God’s Church was to speak in the language of every people?”
Today we rejoice in this festival of the Church’s birth. We celebrate with Christians all over the world as we sing one song of praise to the Lord. All nations lift up their voices in thousands of languages, united by the same Holy Spirit. Happy birthday!
