Today, we celebrate the visit of the Magi to Jesus.
We know little about the Magi. They come from the East and journey to Bethlehem, following an astrological sign, so we believe them to be astrologers. We assume that there were three Magi based upon the naming of their three gifts.
The Gospel does not say how many Magi paid homage to Jesus. In Matthew’s Gospel, they represent the Gentiles’ search for a Saviour. Because the Magi represent the entire world, they also represent our search for Jesus.
Last Sunday Bishop Alan opened the Jubilee Year 2025 for our Diocese at Brentwood Cathedral. Pope Francis has chosen for the Jubilee of 2025 the theme ‘Pilgrims of Hope’.
Some 2025 years ago, the Magi came like pilgrims to adore Jesus, their creator and the King of the universe.
This year, we are called to imitate them by visiting designated places of pilgrimage such as St Antony’s Church and spending some time of adoration in front of the Blessed Sacrament.
May this year be a time of grace, hope and renewal for all of us and for the world.
I wish you a happy and blessed year 2025!
Fr Arnaud
