Today’s Gospel depicts a very profound encounter between the richman and Jesus. Other gospels tell us that the man was young. Which means that he had life before him, full of opportunities. And one great
opportunity is presented to him, as he sees Jesus setting out for a jour ney. The young man runs and kneels before Jesus. He basically blocks Jesus in order to ask him a question: What to do in order to inherit eternal life.
The young man has done a lot already, he has faith in God, he has respected the commandments. He is such a good young man and Jesus loves him. Then, Jesus invites him to the best opportunity ever: sell his
possessions and follow Jesus. This is demanding. And fulfilling. But it is hard for the young man to let go of his possessions and to choose only Jesus.
What about us ?
Prayer: Lord God, you do not promise me an easy life. However, you do offer the promise of eternal life. I will give up everything and follow your Son. Help me to know today what is holding me back and what I am attached to that keeps me from the path that leads to life.
