“They had been arguing which of them was the greatest.” Mk 9
The disciples have been discussing among them which of them was the greatest.
What a waste of time for apostles !
But haven’t we sometimes be caught in that same trap ? How do people see me, am I great enough? Is my job, my career, are my relationships good enough ?
And when each person in a group tries to be considered the greatest, it creates tensions. This comes from our brokenness, our need for security, and from pride.
This is very common, very worldly. It happened even to the apostles.
St Mark is quite bold to report such an uninspiring feat about the disciples of Jesus. But it is understood by scholars that St Mark was a disciple of St Peter and so he reports to us what St Peter was teaching. It means that St Peter, after the death and resurrection of Jesus had become humble enough to speak even
of the times when Jesus scolded the apostles.
How did Jesus respond to this behaviour of the apostles? Jesus showed that he identifies himself with the smallest, with the most innocent, with little children.
“Anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name, welcomes me, and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not me, but the one who sent me. “
May the love of God for us give us this security that we need. May the example and the meekness of Jesus free us from pride and self-centeredness.
Let us give thanks to God for being so good, so loving, and ask him to help us in our battle against sin.
